I wish I had a tub of protein powder for every time I’ve heard, “Hey, what protein powder do you use?” In this article I’m only listing protein powders that are generally considered lower carb and are great for post-workout nutrition or other parts of the day depending on your goals. Please note, there is a significant difference in a protein powder and a weight gainer powder.
I personally prefer a Whey Protein powder. You’ll notice I don’t have any casein only, egg protein, or plant based powders, etc listed below.
I mix all my protein powders in Almond Milk and crushed ice and blend in a Vitamix blender (I’ll link below). I’m slightly addicted to Oreo cookies right now, so I do mix in a couple of those with my shakes currently.
My Top 3 (in order)
1) Syntha-6 from BSN
All the flavors are fantastic, and I tend to rotate them. This is by far the best tasting, high quality whey protein powder I’ve ever tried, and I’ve tried several types the last 20 years. Mixes really well. This would always be my “go to” if I had a choice. I personally like the Vanilla flavor, that way I can add whatever I want to the shake like Oreos or fruit or even ice cream depending what my goals may be at the time.
2) Hydro-Whey from O.N.
I personally like the Chocolate flavor by itself and certainly the Vanilla to mix other foods to. The “hydro-whey” is absorbed quickly which is great for post-workout and bad in some cases like before bed when you want protein to be broken down more slowly. Very high quality and mixes really well. Many would claim this is the highest quality hydrolyzed whey protein powder on the market.
3) NitroTech Power by MuscleTech
This was the first protein powder I started to use in my early 20’s when I was getting serious about working out. It’s got good taste and it blends well and I really like it because it’s already got creatine mixed in the powder. 1 serving of this has 60 grams of protein and 6 grams of creatine – I personally don’t think most of you can actually utilize 60 grams of protein in 1 serving, so I’d recommend splitting that up over a couple servings (saving you some money too!).

I’ll cover some weight gain protein powders in the coming weeks. In the meantime, I recommend giving these a try.
