There is nothing quite like opening day of High School Baseball. We are always excited to get on the road and watch kids play across the Carolinas.

Read below find out more about the 4 teams we saw on Monday (3/2/2020) night:

Athens Drive:

Zach Hurand (2020 Wake Tech Commit): The senior had an impressive opening day! On the mound, the future Eagle was 83-84 with his fastball and showed a 72 mph breaking pitch, as well as a 71 mph change up. His breaking ball had good shape, while showing the ability to the throw in any count. Zach also had a big double in the first inning to get the day started. Hurand will have a chance to be a two way guy for Coach Dudley’s Wake Tech 2021 club.

Jonah Milchuck (2020, Uncommitted): We saw this young man as a sophomore, in 2018, and found him impressive. His body (6′ 7″) has filled out and his arm strength has continued to progress. This is a good looking unsigned senior. Milchunk did not pitch on the afternoon but during I/O, you could see the life and carry on the baseball from right field. In the box, he also hit a grand slam to put the Jaguars up for good. Milchunk swings from the left side of the dish and shows the ability to drive the inner half pitch, with juice to the pull side. This is a guy worth seeing if you are looking to fill your 2020 recruiting class. There is a lot of projection in Jonah!

Apex:

Ben Peterson (2020 Appalachian State Signee): Ben started on the bump for the Cougars. The future Mountaineer, who stands around 6′ 4″, had a fastball that sat around 87-89 mph on the afternoon. Peterson’s delivery is straight over the top and works downhill against opposing hitters. The breaking ball, which is more of a 11/5, sat around 72 mph on the afternoon.

Lukas Schramm (2022, Kentucky Commit): This is a good looking athlete! If you want to see what a baseball player is supposed to look like, go watch this guy. Schramm is loaded with tools. He shows a good arm from the outfield with carry. He moves extremely well in between the lines and he is very physical. At the plate, the right-handed hitter shows bat speed and strength in his swing.

Southern Alamance:

Drew Siegner (2022, Uncommitted): This kid can pitch! If you’re looking to watch a guy with pitch ability, that can locate all his pitches, this is your guy. Standing around 6′ 1″, Siegner shows a fastball around 85 mph that he can command in to hitters, as well as away. Not only does he compete on the mound, the sophomore loves to throw in, which you don’t see a whole lot of. The slider is his out pitch, and it’s good! It has tight spin and works. The velocity was anywhere from 74-77 mph on the night. He also showed a curve ball, which didn’t have as much action as his tight spinning slider. The curve ball sat around 70-72 mph. Drew does have a change up, but did not show it much on the night; in our opinion, he needs to throw more and keep developing it. You don’t see many High School pitchers with three pitches for strikes. He will have four if he can get the change up in his arsenal. This is a name to keep close to the chest in upcoming years for the Patriots!

Maddux Smith (2021, Uncommitted): The 6′ 3″ right-hander came in as relief, after Mr. Siegner, in a very close game with Eastern Guilford. Hats off to Maddux; the young man has made some jumps from the 2019 season. He’s gotten much stronger and his body is in good shape. Maddux’s fastball sat anywhere from 81-84, touching 85 mph a few times on the night. He made some big pitches when it counted vs. the Wildcats. He has the tendency to miss up and arm side when he doesn’t finish, but the frame and projectability of Maddux will be very intriguing for guys at the next level.

Jacob Ray (2021, Uncommitted): Ray plays shortstop for the Patriots and came up with the big hit, in extra innings, to send the Southern Alamance club off on the winning foot. Ray is a really good athlete that can play multiple positions on the diamond. Ray athleticism on the diamond makes the game look easy to him. He would not pitch on the night, but this is also a spot at the next level he could exceed at.

Eastern Guilford:

Jonathan Sendziak (2023, Uncommitted): Coach White sent the young freshman out to the bump in the first game of the spring. This kid is going to be fun to watch develop over the next four years. Sendziak kept the Wildcats in the game. Standing at 5′ 11″, 150 pounds, the right handed pitcher worked his fastball between 79-81 with sinking action. His breaking ball had good shape and sat around 70 mph.

D’Jay Mobley (2020, Uncommitted): The senior roamed center field for the Wildcats. There is no question that he is in charge of the area. In the box, Mobley hit from the left side and showed good ability to hit the ball where it’s pitched. The most impressive at bat of the night was D’Jay driving the ball over the shortstop’s head on the outer half pitch.
