Interview with Vanderbilt’s Associate Head Coach Scott Brown

Everyone knows the success of Vanderbilt baseball over the recent years. I was lucky enough to sit down with Associate Head Coach Scott Brown. Find out more about the Commodores club below.

Trey: Looking back on the 2020 season, where were you when you got the call about Covid postponing the rest of the year?

Coach Brown: “I was walking back to my office from the pitching lab after an individual session when 2 of our players told me the SEC Conference had shut down all sports for 3 weeks. I then sat in my office the remainder of the day watching the dominoes fall in the basketball conference tournaments and conferences until ultimately everything was cancelled.”

Trey: What were your first thoughts when hearing about the virus?

Coach Brown: “Uncertainty…Is this real? I think until it affects you personally there may be some thought to this not being real because it is so different from any norm we have ever experienced. As we quickly found out throughout society, the virus was very real and would have a major impact on our lives for an un seeable amount of time!”

Trey: What did you do to occupy your time in 2020?

Coach Brown: “I was a man of many hats… A dad, A physical educator to my children, A baseball coach to my son, a zoom educator, and a husband to my wife. We did a lot of outdoor stuff with our kids and kept them very active. My 11 year old son practiced baseball almost every day until his season kicked off in early June after which he was able to play 50 games. I was able to watch every game he played last summer which became a nice perk to COVID time. Other than spending time with family we just tried to stay connected to other humans as much as possible through Zoom and outdoor interactions with 6 feet apart.”

Trey: Everyone knows the success of Vanderbilt baseball, what’s one piece of the puzzle most don’t know about on the outside?

Coach Brown: “It not only takes great players but it also takes a level of everyday energy form everyone involved in the organization to sustain consistency.”

Trey: I’ve always heard how detailed oriented Coach Corbin is. How has that made you a better coach being around him?

Coach Brown: “He’s one of the best to coach any sport at any level…he has really opened my eyes and ears to things as a coach that I may not have even noticed 15-20 years ago. Small Details matter! How you do anything is how you do everything!”

Trey: Everyone knows the accolades of Kumar Rocker and Jack Leiter, how would you describe their personalities off the field?

Coach Brown: “They are both very serious kids but what they do is implement their different individual personalities into the team off the field as well on.”

Trey: When you’re out recruiting players, what’s one thing you look for?

Coach Brown: “Maturity”

Trey: What are you looking forward the most about getting out and watching baseball this summer?

Coach Brown: “Just being at the yard….when you are at the yard you have a chance to learn something…”

Trey: When you hear the following names, what comes to mind?

Coach Brown:
Phil Clarke: “Loves baseball! Very Good acumen for the game of baseball.”
Mason Hickman: “Tremendous pitcher with great ability to stay in the moment.”
Harrison Ray: “Awesome player and more importantly awesome person!”
Ro Coleman: “Cares about others way more than he cares about himself! Very Servant to people.”
Austin Martin: “A full blown winner! Competes to beat you in everything! Pretty good hitter as well.”

Trey: If you had one day off, what would you do?

Coach Brown: “Spend time with my family doing just about anything!”
