March 11, 2021By:Trey Daly
For this edition of Impact’s Program Preview, we traveled down to High Point, North Carolina and sat down with Mo Blakeney. Coach Blakeney is the head coach of powerhouse Wesleyan Christian Academy. They’re no stranger to success in North Carolina Baseball! Find out more about the 2021 Warriors below..
How has your club adapted to all the 2021 “protocols” with Covid-19?
It has truly been a challenge, making sure we report in to our Athletic Director every practice with our Covid-19 monitoring forms. We as a staff have to make sure every player reports in before every practice or meeting. Cleaning equipment after every use as best we can, and the list of that goes on and on. We are happy and willing to go through this process to play Baseball.
What has your message been to your club after the stoppage of play in 2020?
We felt with the 2020 team we had a legitimate chance to compete for a State title. Our message to our players was, we can’t cry over spilled milk!! We can only control our next season, we’re looking forward not backwards. NEXT MAN UP!! NEXT CLASS UP!
What are the strength of your 2021 club?
Our strength this year will be our pitching and defense. We have a really good three man rotation on the mound that we feel really good about. Our relievers are very solid, so we have complete confidence in our pitching staff.
Who are you looking to lead the charge this year?
We’re looking for Jacob Cozart (NC State Signee) and Grant Aycock (East Carolina Signee) to lead! These are two young men, we will lean on heavily for their performance and leadership.
Looking at your schedule, what are some of the big games?
We play Charlotte Christian twice, High Point Christian twice, and a really good program against Oak Grove. Our players are excited to play these games against these top caliber programs.
What’s one thing most people don’t know about Wesleyan Christian Baseball?
We pride ourselves on being more than just a good baseball program, we are building men to go out and change the world socially. We want to treat everyone with the utmost respect, we want others to see the professionalism of our student athletes. We pride ourselves on preparing our players for their college experience.
Break down the Cozart boys. Sam (8th grader) & Jacob (Senior), what makes them special? (Pictured above)
Sam Cozart is a once in a generation talent!! To be his size at his age is incredible!! For him to be as consistent in the strike zone with all of his pitches is a awesome thing to watch. For him to be a 8th grader and throw as hard as he does is almost unthinkable! So we will limit his pitch count this season to preserve his career.
Jacob is just a well rounded top caliber baseball player. He has a plus arm behind the plate, and incredible pop with his bat. His Batting practice is something to See!! He totally puts on a show with his bat! He can also play 3B as good as he catches.
Looking back you and your son have had great success in the game of baseball. What are some of the secrets?
Nate and my success in this game derives on being students of the game. We use a strong mental mindset to accomplish specific goals. Understanding what our strengths are and our weaknesses. We have a passion for the game that was given to us by God. All we try to do is honor him by giving our complete best to the game. Everything I learn in Pro Ball I have given to Nate, I pray he becomes a better coach and role model than me.
Thank you Coach Blakeney for your time and information on the 2021 Wesleyan Christian Academy Warriors baseball club.. Stay tuned for more Impact Program Previews…
