Player Development For Baseball

March 25, 2020Trey Daly recently interviewed Campbell University pitching coach Tyler Robinson to discuss the 2020 season and the impact of the Coronavirus.
Q: What’s your thoughts on the Coronavirus?
A: There are just so many unknowns that come with the Coronavirus and that’s what makes it so scary. Had the seasons continued college athletes could have been a huge issue in the spread of the virus. With all of the travel (some air), hotel stays, and meals out at restaurants the exposure would have been high. Right now, as tough as it is to say, this issue is much bigger than baseball.
Q: How was the season going before the cancellation?
A: We started off a little slow but had some good wins through 16 games. We felt like we were starting to get our guys into the right spots on the mound as well as the plate.
Q: How’s the atmosphere around the Buies Creek area now?
A: Most of the students have gone home. Dorms and dinning halls have continued to stay open for those students who could not make it home. We have transitioned to online classes until at least April 6.
Q: How has the Campbell coaching staff handled the day to day operations since the postponement of the 2020 season?
A: The coaching staff has pretty much worked remotely with the exception of cleaning up around the facility. Like most coaching staffs we are in constant communication throughout the day anyways.
Q: What was the message to the team once the cancellation happened?
A: Coach Haire made it clear to our team that they are prepared. No matter what happens next they are prepared for whatever the world throws their way. He also let them know that we will be here for them through this time and always. We had a special group of competitors and they will be successful wherever they may end up.
Q: What’s the next step (in your opinion) what the NCAA needs to do to with the Seniors?
A: I think they are right to give the seniors a year of eligibility back. There are still so many questions that will need to be answered though…scholarship/roster limits, progress towards degree, draft, funding, etc. There is not an easy solution to what has happened but we will try to make the most out of it.
Q: If the Seniors return for 2021, what will the strength of the Campbell club?
A: That will be interesting to see. This club had 14 seniors on it. How many will come back? How many have jobs lined up? How many will transfer as a graduate student? If we got all 14 back with the additions of the guys we currently have committed it would have a chance to be a really special team.
