Recruiting Board
Every college baseball program has a recruiting board in their office. This is a list of players that the program will try and recruit.
Recruiting Depth Chart
The coaches determine which positions they will need to fill. From there they will rank each player in each position in order of recruiting priority. For example, coaches may rank players on a 1-5 scale at every position. The player ranked highest will get recruited the hardest. If he says no, the coach will move on to the next guy. Coaches usually stay in contact with all of their recruits during the process but on different levels.
Many Schools Offer the Same Scholarship to Multiple Players
Not all programs do it that way, but many do. Many programs will make the same offer to multiple recruits at the same time. They tell the kids that the first guy to take it will get it. This is common practice among college recruiters. Right or wrong, chances are if you are being recruited by schools, you will run into a situation like this.
College athletics is a business. Coaches have to sign good players. They know they are competing with other school’s offers. One program’s number 3 shortstop might be another program’s number 1 shortstop. If this program waits around for 2 months and gets a no from their number 1 guy, their number 3 guy might have already committed. That is why multiple offers go out.
