Interview with Liberty University Pitching Coach Matt Williams

I’m very excited to sit down with Matt Williams current Pitching Coach at Liberty University. If you don’t know the name Matt Williams, you might want to get to know it! Matt is one of the best pitching coaches in the game. Wherever Coach Williams have been his pitchers can pitch! Get to know more about Matt Williams below…

Trey: How did you get involved with the college game?

Coach Williams: After I was done playing I was fortunate enough to be given an opportunity by Tim Wallace at Spartanburg Methodist College to coach pitchers and handle the recruiting at one the best junior colleges in the country.

Trey: Looking back through your career as a pitching coach, what’s one thing you have learned?

Coach Williams: Guys who become routine oriented and take ownership in what they do on a daily basis have a chance at becoming the best version of themselves.

Trey: When you are out watching recruits and especially pitchers, what’s one trait you really look for?

Coach Williams: Athleticism/How well do they move and are they a fit for Liberty.

Trey: Liberty has had a great season, what’s one of the secret to the success?

Coach Williams: The selflessness of the guys in the program; It’s a really tight group that loves being together.

Trey: What does Liberty baseball stand for?

Coach Williams: Liberty Baseball gives you the opportunity to grow as person athletically, emotionally, and spiritually all while trying to serve others.

Trey: Liberty’s Head Coach Scott Jackson is a class act all the way around. What’s one thing you have learned from him and that most people don’t know?

Coach Williams: I could go on for days here. He has innate ability to connect with people and a genuine desire to serve each individual in our program become their best on and off the field.

Trey: You had a brief stop in pro baseball as a pitching coach, what’s one area of the game that’s different at that level compared to the college game?

Coach Williams: I would say the demands of a longer season would be the greatest. Also the pro game is not as team oriented as the college game. The college game has much more camaraderie amongst the guys.

Trey: If you could give younger players, especially High School age kids one piece of advice. What would would it be?

Coach Williams: Approach your daily catch play with a heightened focus/concentration and you will be surprised at how much better you understand your body and how much better you become.
